The Mbastu is a fearsome terrestrial predator, easily recognised by its thick, rocky hide, which provides exceptional protection against both natural hazards and rival creatures. Its heavily muscled frame is supported by powerful limbs ending in massive, clawed hands capable of crushing boulders as easily as bone. A line of jagged spikes runs along its back, serving as both defence and display. Covering its shoulders and upper spine is a coarse grey mane and back-fur, which bristles when the creature is agitated or asserting dominance.

Habitat: Mbastu favours mountain ranges, rocky valleys, and volcanic foothills, where sheer cliffs and boulder fields provide both cover and hunting grounds. It prefers to dwell in caverns and cliffside dens, leaving behind deep claw gouges in the stone that mark its territory.

Behaviour: The Mbastu is solitary and highly aggressive, patrolling wide territories that it defends with relentless force. When confronted, it rises onto its hind limbs to appear even larger, slamming its claws into the earth in displays of intimidation. Despite its size, Mbastu is a skilled ambush predator, using its grey, stone-like hide as camouflage among rocks before striking with devastating speed. It is infamous for dragging prey into secluded caves, leaving little more than shattered bones behind.

Diet: Carnivorous. Mbastu preys upon large mountain-dwelling animals, from horned herbivores to other predators that enter its range. Its crushing grip allows it to immobilise prey by breaking bones or shattering protective armour. Once subdued, the creature tears flesh apart with its jagged claws and powerful jaws. It is also known to scavenge, though rarely, as it prefers the challenge of live kills.
