Avarans (Aviara)

Age Expectancy: 60–80 years. Their high metabolic rate (required for flight) leads to a shorter lifespan compared to the slow-aging Aquarans.

Appearance & Physiology:

• Feathered Integration: Avarans are covered in a fine, downy layer of "micro-feathers" that look like soft skin from a distance, with primary flight feathers extending from the arms (wings) and lower back (tail-rudder).
• Avian Skeleton: Their bones are pneumatized (honeycombed with air), making them exceptionally light. Their chest features a pronounced, muscular keel bone (sternum) to anchor the massive muscles needed for flight.
• The Face: Sharp, high cheekbones and large, forward-facing eyes with telescopic vision. They lack a heavy beak, instead having a hardened, keratinized "lip-plate" or very fine serrated teeth.
• Hands/Feet: Their "feet" are actually zygodactyl (two toes forward, two back) with sharp, retractable talons, allowing them to perch on railings or ledges in human cities.

Sexual Dimorphism:

• Females: The "Social Leaders." They possess intricate, iridescent feather patterns and vibrant coloration used for social status and courtship. Their wings are shorter and rounded, optimized for high-agility flight in tight spaces.
• Males: The "Long-Haul Flyers." They have significantly larger wingspans with pointed tips, built for soaring and long-distance travel. Their coloration is more uniform and muted, providing camouflage against the sky or clouds.

Reproduction:

• Egg-Laying: Avarans are oviparous. Females lay a single, large, hard-shelled egg every few years.
• Anatomy: They possess a cloaca—a single opening for waste and reproduction—keeping their internal anatomy streamlined and light for flight.

Far-Future Integration:

• Voice: Due to their dual-air-sac respiratory system, Avaran speech is often described as "flute-like" or "trilling," and they can speak for minutes without pausing for breath.
